Septic problems are never a pleasurable experience. But, with a little TLC and some periodic maintenance you can greatly reduce the chances of septic issues arising.
RECOMMENDATIONS ON: PUMPING
A household with 1 to 2 adults, I recommend pumping every 4 to 6 years.

A household with 1 to 2 adults, and 1 to 3 children I recommend pumping every 2 to 3 years.

RECOMMENDATIONS ON: ADDITIVES
On this topic I must start by stating that these are my views on additives. Some septic pumpers do not believe in the benefit of using additives.

Septic systems will create there own bacteria (This is why some septic pumpers do not believe in adding additives).

Depending on how septic systems are used: number of residence in the household, chemicals, anti-bacterial soaps & detergents and other household products, will determine how well your natural bacteria will thrive or die.

A household of 1 to 2 adults, over 95% of the time I do not recommend using any additives.

A household of 1 to 2 adults with 2 to 3 children, about 95% of the time I do recommend additives.

What should and should not go into your septic tank
Besides toilet paper (that's a no-brainer). A good rule of thumb to go by is (If it doesn't go through you first, it shouldn't go into your septic tank).

Raw food (Garbage disposal), wipes of any kind (baby-wipes - disinfecting wipes - etc), condoms, feminine applicators, hand grenades, boa constrictors, unicorns. This list goes on forever. I recommend just using the "Rule of Thumb" It's a lot easier.
FILTERS

IF YOUR HOME WAS BUILT IN 2001 OR NEWER YOUR SYSTEM MAY HAVE AN EFFLUENT FILTER ON THE OUTLET SIDE OF YOUR TANK. IF THERE IS A FILTER ON YOUR SYSTEM I RECOMMEND CLEANING IT EVERY 18 MONTHS MINIMUM.

CLEANING FILTERS
Once you have pulled your filter from the outlet you should hose it off back into the front (primary chamber) of the tank.

The two things to remember when cleaning your filter are:

#1 Always keep your head turned to the side
#2 Always keep your mouth closed.
The reasons for this should be self-evident. Good luck, and remember to wash up when finished.
